Parental Controls by Age

Ages 3-5: Full Control

  • Screen time: Hard limits — 30 min to 1 hour daily

Ages 6-9: Control with Explanation

  • Browser: Install a filtering extension (e.g., Safe Search)
  • Online games: Disable chat with strangers
  • Conversation: “If you see something weird or unpleasant, tell me. I won’t be mad.”

Ages 10-13: Monitoring + Education

  • Social media: Set up first account together, be a follower
  • Privacy: Teach the rule: “don’t share location, photos, or personal data”
  • AI: Show how ChatGPT works — let them know AI can be wrong

Ages 14+: Trust + Verification

  • Less control, more conversations
  • Teach recognition of: deepfakes, phishing, manipulation
  • Respect privacy — but set clear boundaries
